Sorry, this fundraiser is closed and no longer accepting contributions.
Tuesday, November 29 is #GivingTuesday and DOROT needs your help providing food for homeless and formerly homeless elderly New Yorkers at our Homelessness Prevention Program.
Give today and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000, by the Miriam & Arthur Diamond Charitable Trust.
Imagine, at 70 years old, living in a rent-controlled apartment with the lease in your partner's name. Now imagine what happens if that partner were to pass away unexpectedly. On top of your grief, you now face eviction, and without income or savings, you are unable to find a new home.
For seniors who are 60 or older and facing homelessness, DOROT’s Homelessness Prevention Program offers safe transitional housing, meals, counseling in English, Spanish and French, and assistance in finding a permanent home. DOROT’s Aftercare program provides clients with ongoing services after they move into more permanent housing and for the rest of their lives.
Not only do meals at the Homelessness Prevention Program provide sustenance and nutrition, but mealtime also serves as a gathering for the community of residents and former residents at our transitional housing facility. Seniors share meals and conversation, exchange ideas and help one another feel more connected to the community.
Your support helps people like Mr. N., age 69, who has been an Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP) Aftercare client for nine years. He initially came to the HPP after his landlord took back his apartment to use for his own family. After a few months, HPP staff helped Mr. N. relocate to an apartment, where he still resides. Mr. N. is a considerate and helpful person; he enjoys cooking lunch and feeding other people. He attends dinner at the HPP nearly every evening and brews the coffee. By dining at the HPP, Mr. N. makes the most of his limited income. Mr. N. needs the food that the HPP provides, and he also enjoys the communal support. Mr. N. knows that at the end of each day, he has somewhere to go where he can sit with his friends and share a warm meal over good conversation. This is one of many ways that the support the HPP provides is invaluable.
DOROT alleviates social isolation among the elderly and provides services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. We bring the generations together in a mutually beneficial partnership of elders, volunteers and professionals.
